NU CHI CHAPTER
Chartered April 10, 1955 by 9 well educated men with like ideals. Each of these men had the aspiration to uplift their community by making a difference in their field of endeavor. While in attendance at the local black high school basketball games the founders of NU CHI would meet to plan the foundation of the chapter in East St. Louis.
Bro. La Verne Crawford was the catalyst of NU CHI becoming a chapter. Bro. Crawford befriended many Omega men of the metropolitan area, and while uplifting the community they heard of a graduate chapter in St. Louis (Upsilon Omega) which had been in existence for over 30 years. After affiliating themselves with the brothers of Upsilon Omega for some time they were ready to set out and start their own chapter in East St. Louis.
NU CHI Founders consisted of Bro. Frederick Birth - University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; Bro. Laverne Crawford - University of Illinois at Champaign; Bro. Levi Hollis Dozier - Wiley College in Marshall, TX; Bro. Erwin Dunn Lincoln - University in Jefferson City, MO: Bro. James Grady - University of Illinois at Champaign, Bro. Corliss Glenn - Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee; Bro. Otis D. Morgan - University of Illinois in Champaign, Bro. Raymond Paradise - University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Bro. James Tharp - University of Illinois at Champaign.
NU CHI was responsible for establishing two additional chapters in the area which are: the chartering of Tau Gamma undergraduate chapter at - SIU Edwardsville in 1965 and Tau Upsilon graduate chapter's relocation to Carbondale in 1969. NU CHI has also had the privilege of hosting four, Tenth District Conventions in 1957, 1972, 1984, and most recently the 68th Annual 10th District Convention in 2005.
