The Building Blocks Leading to Omega’s Arrival in Carbondale

The series of events that triggered the arrival of Omega in Carbondale at SIU are attributed to: (1) the arrival on campus of Omega brothers initiated through other chapters and transferring to SIU as students or faculty; (2) the fraternity initiations through Nu Chi graduate chapter in East St. Louis of students at SIU; (3) the chartering of Tau Gamma undergraduate chapter in Edwardsville in 1965 and the fraternity initiations they conducted for students at the Carbondale campus, and (4) the charter transfer to Carbondale in early 1969 of Tau Upsilon graduate chapter from Washington, DC and the fraternity initiations they conducted for undergraduate students at the Carbondale campus.

Numerous other chapters, specifically Iota (1920) in Chicago; Upsilon Omega (1921) in St. Louis; Omicron Sigma (1942) at Washington University, St. Louis; and Eta (1946) at Alcorn State University in Mississippi, all contributed to initiating the Brothers who would eventually come to SIU and initiate the brothers that would petition the Fraternity for a Carbondale chapter, and create the foundation on which Omicron Theta Chapter was built:

Bro. Benjamin L. Shepherd
Initiated: April 25, 1959

ETA CHAPTER

Alcorn State University

Bro. Shepherd is the most senior Brother in terms of years in the Fraternity,  arriving in Carbondale as faculty in 1969, 10 years after his initiation, and about the same time the Tau Upsilon chapter charter was transferred to Carbondale to become the graduate chapter for the city.

Bro. Wallace Bobo

Initiated: December 6, 1960

TAU UPSILON CHAPTER

Washington, DC

IHQ indicates that just before arriving in Carbondale, Bro. Bobo was initiated in 1960 through Tau Upsilon chapter, which at that time was chartered in Washington, DC but had been deactivated by an action of the December 1960 Conclave.
